Leaving Apple & Google: Celebrating the 2021 /e/ project achievements

The beginning of the year is always a good opportunity to reflect on last year and plan for the future. We thought it was worth looking back at key achievements of the year passed. We are truly proud of our team, all the voluntary contributors who helped us to report issues or improve our products. This has been key to making our project better in 2021. Here are several important milestones we reached this past year.
Murena: a new name for /e/OS smartphones in our store
/e/OS and Fairphone
It has been more than a year since we partnered with Fairphone to offer sustainable smartphones that care about your privacy. After a successful launch of Fairphone 3 and Fairphone 3+ in 2020, we have released the Murena Fairphone 4, the first 5G privacy conscious and sustainable phone.
Pre-orders for the Murena Fairphone 4 and its accessories are now available for all European countries and will start to ship starting January 11th, 2022.
/e/OS is now available on 240 devices
We have been hard at work to support more phones to enable many of you to switch to /e/OS, and we’re now available on 240 phones! 🚀
In 2022, we will keep adding key and more recent phones.
The latest additions are:
- Google Pixel 2
- Asus Zenfone Max M2
- Asus Zenfone 5Z
- Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact
- Lenovo Z6 Pro
/e/ joined FairTEC collective
/e/ joined a new collective called FairTEC. With this project, we joined forces with other structures that push for fairer and more sustainable practices within the electronics and telecommunications industries.
Together with Fairphone, Commown, TeleCoop, Midcounties, WeTELL and Neibo, we aim to promote solutions that can help reduce our environmental footprint while still enjoying a normal digital life.
In 2021, we co-created the collective, in 2022, we look to make these solutions more visible and welcome other members. Stay tuned.
Our degoogled smartphones now ship to the United States and Canada
In 2021, we started shipping in North America. We have been really pleased about this new milestone that means a lot for all of us. But we struggled to source enough products to meet all the demand. We should have some very good news to share in a few weeks, with new phones, available in numbers for everyone there.
/e/ has been found to be the most private OS according to University research
We invite you to read the latest study led by Trinity college of Dublin and the Edinburgh University where /e/OS has been listed as the most private option amongst other Android variants from Samsung, Xiaomi, Huawei and others.
In this study, researchers have confirmed not only the vast amount of personal data captured by these leading brands, but also that /e/OS is the only OS not capturing any by default.
