The Mobifree Project, initiated by e Foundation, brings together twelve+ organizations to challenge the norms of mobile technology development.

Once upon a time, in March 2023, e Foundation, the non-profit organization behind /e/OS, and its 11 partners embarked on a mission to provide European citizens and organizations with greater freedom in their mobile software choices. It all began with a visionary project proposal crafted by the e Foundation, aiming to revolutionize the mobile digital landscape.

Eager to bring this vision to life, they sought out partners across Europe who shared our passion for open-source innovation. From operating systems to applications, app stores, and beyond, our partners, including renowned names like F-droid, microG, and Delta Chat, eagerly jumped on board. This this how Mobifree project was created. 

Thanks to the unwavering support of the European Commission, the Mobifree project secured a grant totaling 4.4 million euros through the NGI program. This funding will be allocated to its partners over the course of 36 months, empowering them to improve their products and introduce new features, with a strong emphasis on open-source development.

A part of the whole budget is being distributed through cascade-funding grants. The NLNet foundation, who manages cascade funding applications just announced the first beneficiaries, including:

• Android translation layer – to run regular Android apps on Linux
• LambdaNative F-Droid integration – an open source framework for building cross-platform application
• OpenAGPS – an open AGPS implementation
• Termux – a terminal emulator and GNU/Linux environment
